States should lower the definition of drunk driving to a blood-alcohol reading of no more than .05 percent, the National Transportation Safety Board’s staff recommended, saying the U.S. is too tolerant of impairment behind the wheel.

The safety board at a meeting today said the U.S. is behind other countries, including most of Europe, in having a threshold for drunk driving of .08 in all 50 U.S. states.

I almost cannot put into words how disappointed I was in the documentary you reblogged, HBO’s Koran by Heart.

Every major city in Senegal has almost countless numbers of little boys, called talibé, that spend the majority of their days begging in the streets for money to feed themselves. Poor…

As a Senegalese woman I too am angered by the hardship young talibe boys must go through. Often times, their families send them away to study with Marabouts because they cannot afford to care for the, so its ‘one less mouth to feed’.

Its crucial to know also, that the ‘talibe system’ is not the only way quranic students learn the quran. Those families who can afford it ( such as my own) actually hire a live in marabout to teach an extended family network in the same household. We never had to beg in the streets, we had breaks for breakfast and lunch which were cooked by our mothers, aunties, sisters, etc. So becareful not to generalize. The story of Djamil I think is not linked to the ‘talibe system’, his family especially his father is a religious leader in their community.

I hate the system for many reasons as you have listed. I personally think it gets down to the responsibility of the parents to investigate the conditions in which their children are being exposed. I would never send my child to the city, and be able to sleep at night unless I knew someone I truly trusted was keeping an eye on them. The marabouts are very powerful in Senegal (its ingrained in the system to respect them and their opinions). But I wish people realized that the leaders of yesterday are not the same as those here today. There is more corruption in the world, people (not excluding these holier than tho marabouts) are highly influenced by money.

The only solution is for younger, more educated, socially conscious generation of Senegalese are able to stand up and demand change. Senegalese immigrants or those living at home who are conscious of the alterior motives are not going to sit back and watch for too long.

But no matter what your opinion is on the matter, make sure to keep an open mind, and realize that no matter how prevalent the talibes are on the streets, not all of them are living these conditions, many do learn arabic along with memorizing the quran, many do have a safe and clean living conditions, and many do succeed and learn how to make a living in the real world.

For those that don’t lets keep fighting for them!

DYSAETHESIA AETHIOPICA: Saint-Louis, Senegal and New Orleans: Two Mirror Cities, 17th-21st Century

DYSAETHESIA AETHIOPICA: Saint-Louis, Senegal and New Orleans: Two Mirror Cities, 17th-21st Century:
so-treu:
